Fire is at the heart of community. For millennia, it has provided peoples around the world with warmth, light and a means to cook their food. In this demonstration, we will experience the magic of creating fire using materials sourced from the land – no matches, no lighter!

We will demonstrate two traditional methods of creating fire-by-friction, including the method used in Australia for thousands of years. We will see how, with the right tools and knowledge, we can create a small ember, a seed to be blown into burning flame.

When Claire Dunn decided to leave the city behind and immerse herself in a wilderness survival skills retreat for a year, she made a firm commitment to only lighting fires by rubbing sticks together for 12 months. Her book¬†My Year Without Matches: Escaping the City in Search of the Wild is the memoir of that journey. Claire now shares her love of bushcraft, nature awareness and contemporary wilderness rites-of-passage through her business Nature’s Apprentice.

Steph Brophy is inspired by the magic of people and nature. Steph has experience teaching and working with children both in classrooms and in wild nature, and loves to help nurture their inner curiosity and wildness.

Mel Turnbull runs Firekeepers, a not-for-profit organisation delivering nature connection programs and camps in and around Melbourne. Through their nature clubs, workshops and camps, Firekeepers works to deepen connection with Earth, Ancestors, Ourselves, Community and the More-than-human, offering these strings of connection forward to future generations.
